What lash diameter does to weight, price and feel

Diameter is the least visual specification on a tray and the one that decides whether a set feels light or pulls. Small changes in the number make large changes in weight.

The weight math nobody runs

Weight scales with the square of diameter, not with the number itself. Moving from 0.05 mm to 0.07 mm nearly doubles the cross-section, so each lash is close to twice as heavy at the same length.

That is why a tray sold as 0.07 can feel like a 0.10 in the hand, and why a technician who switches suppliers without checking diameter suddenly reports more natural-lash loss.

The ranges in use

Classic lashes run from 0.10 to 0.20, with 0.15 the common middle. Volume work starts at 0.07 and goes down to 0.03. Hybrid sits between, usually 0.07 to 0.10. Anything at 0.20 and above belongs in a specific styling conversation, not a general catalogue.

For a full volume set, five fine lashes at 0.05 weigh less than one 0.12 classic, which is the whole reason volume is possible without damaging the natural lash.

Tolerance matters more than the label

A tolerance of 0.01 mm on a 0.07 lash is roughly a third of the cross-section. A tray at the top of tolerance behaves like 0.08, and a set built from it feels heavier than the artist expects.

Ask whether the number is nominal or measured, and what the tolerance is. Factories that extrude their own fibre can usually hold tighter than ones that buy finished fibre and repack it.

Why finer costs more

Thinner fibre is harder to extrude consistently, harder to curl without deformation, and slower to pack because more lashes fit in the same tray. The price per tray rises even though the material per lash falls.

If a quote for 0.03 comes in below 0.07, ask what the actual diameter is. The answer is usually that the tray holds fewer lashes, or that the fibre is not what the sheet claims.

Choosing by service type

Classic sets: 0.12 to 0.15 for a defined line, 0.10 for clients with fine natural lashes. Volume sets: 0.05 to 0.07 for two to four lashes per fan, 0.03 for six or more. Hybrid: 0.07 for the fan, 0.10 for the spikes.

Mega volume at 0.03 is unforgiving. It shows every handling error, and it needs a faster adhesive and better isolation than a 0.05 set. Stock it only for artists who already work at that level.

Diameter and the natural lash

The safe load for a natural lash is a small fraction of its own weight. Heavier extensions shorten the growth cycle and increase early shedding, which is then blamed on retention.

A useful rule for a salon: if a client’s natural lashes look sparse at the base, drop one diameter step before shortening the set. It looks better and lasts longer.

What to write on the purchase order

Diameter, tolerance, length mix, curl angle and tray rows. Add whether the tray count is adjusted for diameter, because a 0.03 tray holds more lashes per row than a 0.15 tray and the price per row is not comparable across diameters.

Buyers who compare cost per lash instead of cost per tray make better decisions at the fine end of the range.

Testing a new diameter

Build ten fans at the new diameter and place them on a practice strip. Check the fan closes cleanly, the base holds without a bulky node, and the tip does not flare under the ring light.

Then wear-test on one model for a week. Diameter problems show up as early loss and as a set that looks heavier than its length suggests.

Questions buyers ask

Is 0.07 twice the weight of 0.05?

Close to it. Weight scales with the square of diameter, so 0.07 is about 1.96 times heavier.

What diameter is standard for classic?

0.15 in most markets, with 0.12 for a lighter result.

Why is 0.03 more expensive?

Harder to produce and slower to pack, and the tray holds more lashes per row.

What tolerance should I ask for?

0.005 mm if the factory can hold it. 0.01 mm is common.

Does diameter affect price per tray?

Yes, at the fine end. Compare cost per lash rather than per tray.

Can I mix diameters in a set?

Yes. Hybrid sets do this deliberately with finer fans and heavier spikes.

Does diameter change cure time?

Indirectly. Thicker lashes need a slightly larger adhesive dot for the same hold.

What is mega volume?

Six or more lashes per fan at 0.03 to 0.05.

How do I check a tray’s diameter?

Compare weight and bend against a known tray, and ask for the measured tolerance.

How do I order?

Send the diameter and tolerance you need through the contact page.

Get the measured number, not the label

Our spec sheets state nominal diameter and the tolerance we hold. Ask for a sample at two diameters and compare the weight in the hand before you commit to a case.
