Strip lashes or cluster lashes: which line to stock first
Both sell to the same customer eventually. They do not sell the same way, and stocking the wrong one first ties up cash in the format your market does not repeat on.
The repeat cycle is different
A strip lash is bought for an occasion. It gets reused 15 to 30 times, which means the customer buys again next season, not next month.
A cluster set is bought for a routine. It lasts five to seven days, so a regular wearer goes through four to six sets a month. The first purchase is harder to win and the second is almost automatic.
That difference decides which line suits your channel. A marketplace seller with strong search traffic can win the single strip purchase repeatedly. A brand with an email list or a salon network does better on clusters, because the repeat is built into the product.
Where strip lashes win
- Gifting and seasonal peaks. Prom, wedding season, holidays. Strip lashes sell in spikes and survive long shelf life.
- Retail shelf. A strip pack is easy to understand in three seconds, which is all a shelf gets.
- Low support. No adhesive technique, no daily routine, no seal step. Return rate is lower than clusters for that reason.
- Cheap to test. One style at 100 pieces tells you whether the market likes the look.
The weakness is repeat. A customer who buys a strip in March may not buy again until December, so the line depends on new customers rather than returning ones.
Where clusters win
- Repeat revenue. Four to six sets a month per regular wearer, plus adhesive and seal as consumables.
- Bundles. Lashes, bond, seal and remover sell as one first purchase, which lifts order value.
- Social proof. Application videos travel further than static product shots, which suits short-form channels.
- Higher margin per customer. The consumable attach rate is what makes the unit economics work.
The weakness is support. Every cluster brand inherits questions about why a set did not last, and most of those are prep or placement problems. The insert does more work than the product page.
What to order first, by channel
| Channel | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace, search-led | Strip lashes, three styles | Single purchase converts on search; repeat is less important |
| Brand with email or social | Cluster kit | Repeat and bundles compound through owned audience |
| Salon or distributor | Cluster plus adhesive | Consumables reorder monthly, strip does not |
| Gifting or seasonal | Strip sets | Long shelf life, occasion-driven demand |
| Testing a new market | Strip, one style | Lowest cost to learn whether the look sells |
The mistake buyers make
Ordering both at the same time at full depth. Two new lines means two sets of packaging, two sets of photography and two learning curves, and neither gets enough attention to prove itself.
Start with one line at 100 pieces per style, run it for a quarter, then add the second. The second line is easier once the first has taught you how your market reads lash photography and what the returns look like.
Questions buyers ask
Which line has better margin?
Clusters, once the customer repeats. Strip lashes look better on a single unit but repeat slowly.
Can I sell both in one brand?
Yes, and most mature brands do. Sequence them rather than launching together.
Which has higher returns?
Clusters, mostly from application expectations rather than product defects.
What is the cheapest test?
One strip style at 100 pieces. It answers the look question without committing to a routine product.
Do clusters need adhesive?
Yes, and selling bond and seal with the lashes is what makes the line work commercially.
What should the strip insert say?
Peel from the outer corner, remove old glue, store band down.
What should the cluster insert say?
Cleanse, thin line, place at the base, seal, sleep on silk.
Can I private label both?
Yes, from 100 pieces per style with a sticker, or a printed box from a $500 order.
How long is production?
10 to 15 working days for custom runs, plus 1 to 3 weeks for printed packaging.
